Oregano oil for immune wellness
Oregano oil is sold for immune wellness as a structure/function product: under US law a dietary supplement may say an ingredient supports or maintains a normal body function, and it may say nothing further. That single sentence is the most useful thing on this page, because it tells you exactly where the honest ceiling sits — and it tells you that any page promising more has stepped outside the lane a label is allowed to occupy. What does "immune support" actually mean on a supplement label?
It is a legal category, not a marketing adjective — and the rules that define it are public and specific. Under 21 CFR 101.93, a dietary supplement may carry a structure/function claim: a statement that an ingredient supports or maintains a normal structure or function of the body, such as immune function. No pre-market approval is required. What is required is a pair of obligations most shoppers have never heard of. First, the company must notify the FDA of the claim no later than 30 days after first marketing the product with it — a post-market notification, submitted with the exact text of the claim. Second, the label must carry the disclaimer stating that the FDA has not evaluated the statement and that the product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. That line at the bottom of this page, and at the bottom of every reputable supplement page, is not decorative caution. It is the licence fee for the phrase "immune support." Once you know that, the whole category becomes readable: "supports" and "maintains" are inside the lane, and everything more definite is outside it.
Why can't oregano oil claim more than support?
Because the moment a statement names an illness or implies preventing one, it stops being a structure/function claim and becomes a disease claim — which would make the product an unapproved drug rather than a dietary supplement. There is no middle setting. This is why a careful page will tell you what a compound is and how it is traditionally used, and will decline to tell you what it will do for you next February. It is also a practical filter you can apply while shopping in about four seconds: if a product page or article promises to see you through a season, to handle a specific illness, or to act on something the body is fighting, the seller has written something they could not legally print on the bottle. That gap between what the website says and what the label says is, in our experience, the single most reliable quality signal in this category — and it costs nothing to check, because the label is usually photographed in the listing. What do carvacrol and thymoquinone actually contribute?
Both are phenolic compounds studied chiefly for antioxidant behaviour in laboratory assays — which is a real and interesting fact about the chemistry, and not a statement about anyone's body. Carvacrol is the dominant constituent of oregano essential oil; published compositional analyses of Greek-type oregano oils typically report it in the region of 76–86% of the oil. It is routinely measured for radical-scavenging activity in standard tests such as DPPH, where isolated carvacrol has been reported at around 64% scavenging at 0.78 µL/mL with an EC50 near 0.42 µL/mL in ethanol. Thymoquinone is the signature constituent of the volatile fraction of black seed oil, and has been characterised as a scavenger of superoxide radicals using cyclic voltammetry alongside structural work by X-ray diffraction. Now the important qualification, stated plainly because most pages in this lane skip it: every one of those numbers describes an isolated compound in a test tube. A radical-scavenging figure measured in a solvent is a property of the molecule, not a prediction about a person who swallowed two drops in a glass of water. Why won't you quote an ORAC score?
Because the USDA withdrew its own ORAC database in 2012, and said why. Oregano scores extremely well on ORAC — the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity assay — and you will find that figure recycled across the category as though it settles something. What the recycling leaves out is that the US Department of Agriculture removed the database from its website on the grounds that the values were being routinely misused by food and supplement marketers, and that there is no evidence the antioxidant capacity measured in a test tube translates into a specific beneficial effect in people. The agency that generated the number retired the number. Repeating it now, fourteen years later, as a reason to buy something is not a small liberty. So: oregano is a phenol-rich plant and that is genuinely why it has been used and studied for as long as it has — but the honest version of that sentence does not come with a score attached, and a bottle that leads with one is telling you more about its marketing than its contents.
How much does a serving supply, and how far does a bottle go?

And if you follow the short-run convention that dominates this category instead, a 7–10 day run at two servings a day consumes only 14 to 20 servings, meaning one bottle carries roughly 10 to 14 separate runs. How does a botanical compare with the immune nutrients on the shelf?
They belong to different regulatory categories and have to be read differently — which is why comparing an oregano oil to a vitamin C tablet by looking for the same number on both labels does not work.

The row that does the work is the last column. For a vitamin, the percentage is the comparison. For a botanical, there is no percentage available at all — a Daily Value has never been established for oregano or for Nigella sativa — so the only common unit is milligrams of a named compound per serving. This is precisely why a bottle that prints "80%+ carvacrol" and nothing else has given you a specification of the oil rather than of the serving, and why the number to look for is the one on the far side of the arithmetic. When should you start, and should you cycle?
The category convention is short runs with breaks rather than indefinite daily use — most commonly described as roughly 7 to 14 days on followed by a break — and the honest basis for that convention is an absence rather than a documented ceiling. Continuous long-term use of a concentrated botanical simply has not been characterised the way short-run use has, so the cautious pattern became the default, and it is a reasonable one to follow. On when to start: there is no evidence-based date, and any page that hands you one has invented it. A more useful framing is habit rather than calendar. Take it with food, keep the servings consistent rather than doubling up on the days you feel you should, and treat it as one ordinary component of a routine whose larger pieces are sleep, food, hydration and hand-washing — none of which come in a bottle and all of which matter more. Which claims in this lane should you not believe?
Three figures are circulating widely in the immune-wellness lane right now, and none of them will appear on this site. "Boosts immune markers 15–25% in four human studies" — presented without a citation anyone can follow to a study, and describing a measured biological outcome rather than a structure-or-function matter. "Gut microbes account for 70% of immune function" — a tidy-sounding number that traces back to nothing checkable and that is doing rhetorical work rather than informative work. And "continuous use beyond 14 days may strain liver function" — which describes a medical outcome outright, sits well outside the language any supplement page is entitled to use, and has the additional oddity of being a scare claim used to sell a cycling protocol. We decline all three. We would rather be the page that tells you what it does not know than the page that is quotable and wrong. And to be even-handed: this refusal is not a claim that the compounds do nothing — it is a claim that the specific numbers being circulated are not supported well enough to repeat, which is a narrower and more defensible position. What does a simple cold-weather routine look like?
Two drops, diluted, with food, once or twice a day, consistently — that is the entire routine, and its simplicity is the point. In practice: put 2 drops into 4–8 oz of water or juice, or onto a teaspoon of olive oil, take it alongside a meal rather than on an empty stomach, and keep the bottle somewhere cool and dark rather than on a windowsill. Do not increase the serving because the weather turned; the label ceiling of three servings a day exists for a reason and there is nothing on the other side of it.
